Analysis of Prey Composition in Eurasian Reed Warblers’ Acrocephalus scirpaceus Droppings at Four Breeding Sites in Italy

چکیده
Our aim was to investigate the among-populations diversity of prey composition in Eurasian Reed Warblers’ diets via their droppings, both assess ecological validity this sampling method and test whether species most abundant fecal samples were also present Italian study site. We collected at four sites throughout Italy, for a total 144 samples. Within reedbeds, breeding habitat Warbler, we arthropods by carrying out entomological sweepings one sites. samples, identified dozens species, belonging mainly Araneae, Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera Aphidoidea taxa, whose compositions not statistically different among The commonest Coleoptera droppings (68.5%) Diptera reedbeds (31.3%), although latter less numerous populations Warbler emerging from our underline strong Coleopteran presence, without differences across Italy. Fecal appear be an exhaustive variation diet its importance; however, potential caveats do exist, such as possible under-representation Diptera.

The Effects of Supplementary Food on the Breeding Performance of Eurasian Reed Warblers Acrocephalus scirpaceus; Implications for Climate Change Impacts
Understanding the mechanisms by which climate variation can drive population changes requires information linking climate, local conditions, trophic resources, behaviour and demography. Climate change alters the seasonal pattern of emergence and abundance of invertebrate populations, which may have important consequences for the breeding performance and population change of insectivorous birds....
متن کاملCoping with Shifting Nest Predation Refuges by European Reed Warblers Acrocephalus scirpaceus
Predation, the most important source of nest mortality in altricial birds, has been a subject of numerous studies during past decades. However, the temporal dynamics between changing predation pressures and parental responses remain poorly understood. We analysed characteristics of 524 nests of European reed warblers monitored during six consecutive breeding seasons in the same area, and found ...
متن کاملBlood parasite infestation and the leukocyte profiles in adult and immature reed warblers (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) and sedge warblers (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus) during autumn migration
Haemoparasites prevalence in birds can vary among species, age and sex groups and ecological conditions. To comprehend the host–parasite assemblages, it is important to investigate physiological mechanisms underlying the interactions in wild bird species. Here, using blood smears we investigated how leukocyte profiles in reed warblers (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) and sedge warblers (Acrocephalus s...
متن کاملExperimentally Simulating Paternity Uncertainty: Immediate and Long-Term Responses of Male and Female Reed Warblers Acrocephalus scirpaceus
In many socially monogamous species, both sexes seek copulation outside the pair bond in order to increase their reproductive success. In response, males adopt counter-strategies to combat the risk of losing paternity. However, no study so far has tried to experimentally prove the function of behaviour for paternity assurance. Introducing a potential extra-pair partner during the female fertile...
متن کاملStable isotope ratios in winter-grown feathers of Great Reed Warblers Acrocephalus arundinaceus, Clamorous Reed Warblers A. stentoreus and their hybrids in a sympatric breeding population in Kazakhstan
Analyses of the stable isotope composition of feathers can provide significant insight into the spatial structure of bird migration. We collected feathers from Great Reed Warblers Acrocephalus arundinaceus, Clamorous Reed Warblers A. stentoreus and a small sample of their hybrids in a sympatric breeding population in Kazakhstan to assess natural variation in stable isotope signatures and deline...
